Hi Carol, it sounds like you've been working with project based learning (PBL) for a number of years now. How has it gone so far with regard to meeting standards? Anyone who's used PBL even for a few months, please feel free to jump in.

Carol - I like that idea. There's a green space opposite the site we're thinking of using for our schools. I'll try to find out who owns it. Might be an idea to build a community park as a resource.

This year we started using the Common Core State Standards. Meeting the standards has not been a problem because I start with assessment and an ILP for every child, which makes it possible to make sure the project or problem the student is working on has the standards they need to work on.

It's been an exciting year with wonderful students. I've been very busy with project based learning and starting problem based learning. What an exciting time!

Hi! What book(s) do you recommend a newcomer to PBL read?

Nadjib, I looked for the perfect book for a long time and didn't find it. One book that ss really helping me, which I am reading now, is "Advancing Differentiation" by Richard M. Cash.

Here is a great web site for the basics of project based learning.

"Teaching Minds" by Roger Schank would be an excellent introduction to project based learning. Instead of tips and tricks for better projects, Schank explains exactly why PBL works and how to improve students' cognitive abilities. It's a great read and a refreshing (and logical) argument against instruction methods that force students to memorize facts.

To put a technological/video game spin on project based learning, a student brought this article to my attention. I used the idea within a poetry unit where students created avatars for themselves, and we set up a March Madness-like bracket for a Poetry Slam. I had eighth grade boys selecting poetry (on their own) by Robert Frost and other classics. I really think there is something here if you pair it up with your projects. The article is about a professor who uses RPG-like experience points instead of grades...

Sounds great. I've used Scratch with 4th and 5th graders, where kids created tours of a country. It's a free program that can be used for all subject areas. http://scratch.mit.edu/

Pam
Pam ,
Hi
I am really interested in sharing ideas with this group. I teach H.S. Alternative Education students, 10th-12th. My students have struggled in the traditional high school setting. Some transfer to my class straight from the high school, some have been home schooled, many are teen parents, some are "drop backs", and some are involved with the law and substance abuse.

Getting the students engaged in their learning is critical. My goals when presenting an activity/lesson are:
Students are active, many of the students are hands on learners
Lessons must be relevant and meaningful
Cooperative working groups--students are social and need to practice, refine their interpersonal skills.
Students need choices.

Looking forward to sharing and learning from this group.

Hi Pam,

Welcome to the group, and I am also looking forward to hearing projects your students work on this year. For several years I have been using PBL in my classroom, and feel it is the most engaging method I have used in the classroom.

This week I'm creating a new PBL form for the kids to use as they plan their projects, and for me to keep track of our conferences and their progress. Have either of you used PBL forms in the past? The last one I used didn't keep track of conferences and was much to long.
